United Way of La Porte County offers a solution to filing your taxes for free.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free
tax help to people who generally make $60,000 or less, persons with
disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need
assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide
free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified
individuals.
The IRS certified volunteers will prepare your taxes at no cost, or you can
visit myfreetaxes.com to prepare your taxes yourself. Assistance is provided at
community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and
other convenient locations.
The VITA program, within the last two years, has served over
1,700 people. The money that these individuals have saved in tax preparer
expenses totals $315,000.
We
are fortunate enough to have two organizations to host our VITA program. 2023
tax sites include La Porte Salvation Army and the Michigan City Public Library,
please see below for both location information. You must call to make an
appointment at both locations, neither will accept walk-ins.
