Community Funding Provides Roof for Homeless Shelter

Local businesses are once again coming together to help the homeless in La Porte County.

Thanks to a $47,000 grant from Howmet Foundation, Interfaith Community PADS will be getting a new roof this year, which shelter Director Harrison Holtkamp says is desperately needed.

“Since acquiring the building our number one goal has been to provide a safe, secure and sound building that ensures those that we serve will have a comfortable shelter to rest, relax, and enjoy a home cooked meal,” said Holtkamp.

Funds received from Howmet Foundation and a generous donation from GAF will provide supplies, materials, and labor to replace the aging roof on the 108-year-old building. Work will be provided by Korellis Roofing and include a complete tear off and removal of the cupola along with any needed repairs and reroofing. Holtkamp expects work to be finished by the end of October. GAF is North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer and has been a proud part of the La Porte County community for more than 20 years.

“Through our GAF Community Matters initiative, we are committed to making a positive difference as neighbors and partners in the communities across North America,” said Jeff Terry, GAF vice president of corporate social responsibility and sustainability. “As part of this effort, we bring our resources, expertise and products to help build more resilient communities, but our work is only possible with partners to help make a meaningful impact.”

Located at the former Sacred Heart Church at 1001 W 8th St., since 2020, Interfaith Community PADS has been providing LaPorte County with emergency shelter since 2001. They now operate the only emergency shelter for men, women, and women with children in La Porte County.

“We are so grateful to receive help from these great businesses. We appreciate working with our community to provide much needed shelter, meals, and connective services to those in need,” said Holtkamp.
