Michigan City High School has two new head coaches to lead the Wolves in
the upcoming school year, following a vote by the MCAS Board of Trustees. The
board voted on Tuesday to approve Jocelyn Garner as Head Coach for the MCHS
volleyball team and Ethan Warne as Head Coach for the MCHS boys soccer team.
Garner, a 1999 graduate of Michigan City High School, was part of the
State Championship volleyball team in 1995 under then-Coach Bennie Edwards and
has long awaited the chance to coach this team.
“I knew what the program was about when I went to MCHS, and I am looking
forward to restoring Bennie Edwards’ caliber of volleyball: discipline, sound
fundamentals, and dominance,” she said. By implementing a culture of positivity
and teamwork, Garner said her goal is to win the Duneland Athletic Conference
and take her team to State.
Garner is a 7th grade math teacher at Barker Middle School and has nine years of
coaching experience with the MCHS Wolves junior varsity team and as assistant
varsity coach.
Warne moves into the Head Coach position for boys soccer after serving
as JV Coach during the 2021-2022 season. He has previously served as JV
volunteer coach at Portage High School and served as the Portage Parks Youth
Soccer League Director for three years.
A 2017 graduate of Portage High School, Warne was a
4-year varsity letter winner during his high school soccer career and was voted
Top Team Player during his senior year. He is currently pursuing a career in
teaching.
“I think I can help bring out the real potential this team has,” said Warne,
who is aiming to start the season on a positive note. “I am looking forward to
building a great bond with the team and can’t wait to see what the future holds
for us.”
