“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of our service, and our holiday assistance program is no exception,” said Major Becky Simmons of The Salvation Army of Michigan City. “To protect the health and safety of our clients, staff and volunteers we will accept online applications this year.”

Applications can be found at Visitors to the site should scroll down near the bottom of the page and click on “Apply Online.”

“We know this has been a very challenging year for everyone, so we are anticipating an unprecedented number of applications so we recommend getting applications in as soon as possible,” Simmons said, asking for patience and understanding from the community as The Salvation Army adjusts to this new system.

Any local family in need of help can request assistance of toys and/or food for Christmas. All families who apply to The Salvation Army of Michigan City will receive food assistance; and families with children ages 12 and under will receive Christmas gifts. Official documentation showing the child’s date of birth will be required.

Families requesting assistance from The Salvation Army of Michigan City must reside within the Michigan City Area Schools district.  Otherwise, those living outside this boundary but still within La Porte County will be referred to The Salvation Army of La Porte for Christmas help.

“We would like to thank everyone who has generously supported our mission this year as we have responded to the COVID-19 crisis,” Simmons said. She especially acknowledged sponsors of the 2020 Christmas Campaign including Central States Manufacturing, GAF, Harbour Trust and Investment Management, General Insurance Services and Horizon Bank for their support of the Christmas campaign this year.

The Salvation Army of Michigan City is accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for the toy shop this year. With the increased need in the community, Simmons said the number of families served this year could top more than 900 local families. “The need has always been there, this year it just happens to be greater,” she said.
