Poets invited to showcase their work
Westville, IN
04/12/2017 10:10 AM
The Purdue University Northwest English Club, sponsored by the PNW English Department, will host the 7th annual PoetryPalooza at 7 p.m., Thursday (4/13) in the Library-Student-Faculty (LSF) Building, Room 02 on the Westville Campus.

PoetryPalooza is an all-ages original poetry competition and open mic event to the public. There is a $5 entry fee for poets who wish to participate. Each competing poet may read up to three original poems. Admission for spectators is $1. Light refreshments will be served.

Cash prizes of $75, $50, and $25 will be awarded to the top three poets. The audience also will vote to award $25 to the evening’s “Crowd Favorite.” A panel of three judges, including special guest judge George Kalamaras, former poet laureate of Indiana, will choose the winners.

Kalamaras, a past National Education Association grant and Fulbright Fellowship winner and the author of 14 poetry collections, also will read original work at the event.

“We’re thrilled to have such an accomplished poet as Dr. Kalamaras joining us this year,” PNW Assistant Professor of English and co-advisor of the PNW English Club Bethany Lee said. “He’s not only talented, but he believes wholeheartedly in the power of writing and arts. PoetryPalooza has consistently brought out an amazing group of talented Northwest Indiana writers, so I’m delighted to have someone who values poetry’s place in the community to come be part of this event.”

After the competition, poets and spectators are invited to participate in an open mic. Pre-registration is not required, but encouraged. Email Prof. Lee at btlee@pnw.edu with questions or to sign up in advance.

To request a disability-related accommodation for this event, phone the Office of Equity and Diversity at the Hammond campus (219-989-2163), the Westville campus (219-785-5545) or email oed@pnw.edu .
