Celebrate the rich and enduring legacy of Native American Heritage along the very same river banks and forested valleys where the Potawatomi hunted and fished hundreds of years ago. Stroll through the Native American garden featuring plots of native and heirloom plants -- many of which are edible and/or medicinal. Guests can also experience the prairie restoration garden, a plot recreating a small patch of the grassland habitats that once covered vast swaths of the Midwest.Visitors will also have the chance to experience Indigenous Peoples’ traditional gardening, trapping, cooking, and crafting techniques first-hand through presentations and demonstrations by local experts. ?Free craft activities for children will be available in the Native American Garden.At noon, Henry Boulley, Ojibwe, New Buffalo, will start the fire in a traditional manner. He will then speak to the public about his ancestors, customs, foods, ceremonies, and what's happening in 2018 in the Native American world. The 39th Annual Triathlon will be held on August 4th at Soldier’s Memorial Park in La Porte, Indiana. This event features Chip Timing and includes a 1/4 mile lake swim, 12.4 mile bike ride and 3.4 mile run. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete as individuals or as part of a team. Awards will be given to each overall female, male and female masters finishers as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for each age category. Athlete registration opens at 6:30 A.M. (CST) at Cummings Lodge in Soldier’s Memorial Park and closes at 7:30 A.M. The La Porte County Family YMCA is also offering an orientation beginning at 7:30 A.M. at the Beach House for those individuals competing in the Triathlon for the first time. The first wave of racers will begin promptly at 8:00 A.M followed by waves in five minute increments thereafter. The 39th Annual Triathlon is currently $75.00 for individual racers (adult and youth) and $155.00 for each team. To register for this challenging and fun experience, log onto www.lpymca.org or complete the registration form at either the Long Beach, Elston or La Porte County Family YMCA branches.
